Dynamic and static

As a teenager, I wrote poetry to express on paper what I could not express to anyone verbally. At one point I collected a few into a book which I recently found again.

Rereading the thoughts and emotions of that 17 year old and instantly knowing who or what she had been writing about, brought back so many memories. But it also showed how long I have struggled with the darkness and pain I’ve felt. As much as things change, they also stay the same.

I thought I might share some of these poems with you, so over the next few days I will post them. There are quite a few dark ones, but don’t worry, I don’t feel like that now!

 The Heart of Darkness (1994)

Into the heart of darkness,
I wander …
Alone and afraid.
The night closes around me,
Haunting me …
Stalking me.
My screams and cries are not heard,
Being caught and lost in the night.
My heart is heavy,
And oppression has taken me prisoner.
How much longer can I hold on?
How much more pain can I take
Until the night claims me as its child and prize?
The pain that sears across the night,
Has no boundaries …
No limits ….
Aiming only to consume me.
There is no release,
No escape from the night …
I am trapped …
No light …
No hope …
The night cradles me in its arms.
I am lost …
Yet, I am now free.
